FACTS & INFORMATION

  •        Heart of Mary School is located on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue between Broad and Congress Streets.
  •        Heart of Mary is staffed by licensed Lay teachers and the Sisters of St. Francis and Trinitarian Sisters.
  •        The campus encompasses two buildings with three grade divisions: Primary Pre-K - Grade 2, , Intermediate Grades 3-5, Upper School Grades 6-8.
  •     The school serves students from Pre-Kindergarten to Eighth grade. Four year old students are accepted for Heart of Mary full day Pre-Kindergarten program.
  •      Heart of Mary benefits from Title 1 funds and participates in the Alabama Reading First Initiative program.  The ARFI program is offered after school for students needing this assistance.
  •   All students must carry at least a "C" average to be considered for promotion to the next grade level.
  •   A "C" average and acceptable conduct must be attained to be eligible for sports and/or cheerleading.
  •    Accelerated classes are formed to advance students showing outstanding ability. Generally, these classes advance Primary and Intermediate level students.
  •    Primary students needing additional reinforcement are scheduled into additional classes with the Resource Teacher.
    Additional help is available after school hours by appointment with the teacher or in an on-site after-school program and also at the adjacent Dearborn Community Center.
  •      All students are expected to do homework at least four days a week and take study seriously. Homework, class participation, quick check tests, major tests and projects are sources of assessment.
  • Alabama State Curriculum guidelines are followed.
  • Fully  accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)

Parent Organization
The Parent Organization in this school is called PAC (Parents At Center of education). This organization focuses on the academic and moral development of children.

Parents are expected to:

                                                   Be involved from attendance at general PAC meetings to                                                                                              meeting teachers

Be financially supportive helping with fund raisers, securing matching funds from employers and obtaining direct grants that benefit the school.

Being a volunteer at Heart of Mary is vital to its growth. Opportunities for daily service exist in the lunchroom, on the playgrounds and in the classrooms. One hour a week can make a difference. A parent’s presence demonstrates interest and support.

Other opportunities for parents:

Parent Education Programs are held throughout the year to provide insights on parenting and child development. Topics on educational issues are planned through the year. School bulletins are sent home to provide monthly updates on current programs and calendar items.

Booster Club is a supportive arm of PAC that is interested in the                                                                                                       growth of the sports program at Heart of Mary.

ACE (Alliance for Catholic Education)

Most Pure Heart of Mary is affiliated with Notre Dame’s ACE (Alliance for Catholic Education) Program, Catholic Education.  The ACE program allows Notre Dame college graduates the opportunity to serve as full-time teachers in under-resourced Catholic schools.
ACE teachers spend two summers (June-July) studying in the Master of Education program at Notre Dame and two school years (August-May) teaching in under-resourced Catholic schools across the country.



STATISTICS

Most Pure Heart of Mary has been an institution in the community for over 100 years and is very proud of the success rate of its Alumnae. Historically, parents and students have chosen Heart of Mary School due to history or heritage.  Students presently come from 18 different zip code areas within and around Mobile. Families endeavor to carry on this strong educational tradition through several generations.

Accessibility to downtown Mobile with businesses, hospitals, city shipping docks, hotels and Municipal Court Buildings enable parents working in the city to drop off and pick up students easily.
